SPECIAL EDITION - SYNERGY No.1 2005: SOCIAL INCLUSION

People with a mental illness are at a high risk of being socially excluded
due to difficulties seeking and maintaining employment, stigma and
discrimination, limited emphasis on social inclusion by services and
barriers to community engagement such as lack of adequate transport and
housing.

People from diverse backgrounds are at further risk due to being alienated
from the mainstream, having English as a second language and a limited
knowledge of Australian systems.

This edition of Synergy seeks to discuss social inclusion and its
ramifications for culturally diverse mental health consumers.

The discussion starts with Associate Professor Nicholas Procter and Dr
Bernadette Wright talking of the challenges social inclusion raises for
mental health professionals. Professor Leslie Swartz then shares his
experiences of racism in South Africa and Nada Eltaiba provides insights
into the role of religion in the treatment of mental illness within the
Muslim faith.

We talk with a culturally diverse carer, consumer and clinician to get
their perspectives on social inclusion and Meg Griffiths examines the
interface between policy and evidence.

This edition is also packed with resources and websites for further
reading, the national noticeboard to keep you up to date and the events
calendar - so you know what is happening.
