WHATS NEW?

1.NSW Refugee Week is held from the 23 - 29 October 2005. It provides a
unique opportunity for refugee communities to hold events and functions
that highlight the culture and contribution of their particular community.
To encourage community groups and organisations to hold events and
functions during Refugee Week, the Community Relations Commission has
provided funding to the Refugee Week Steering Committee to distribute as
small grants ($250-$500). The grants are designed to enable grass-roots
community participation in events that include refugee communities during
Refugee Week. Deadline for grant submissions is 27 August 2005. Further

2.A new Youth Mental Health Foundation to better assist young Australians
who suffer from mental illness is to be established by the Australian
Government. The Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Health and
Ageing, Christopher Pyne, said the foundation would provide a
national,coordinatedfocus on youth mental health and related drug and alcohol
problems in Australia.The foundation will be funded under the $69 million

3.The organisers of the third National Conference on Human Rights and
Mental Health are looking for volunteers in the following roles.
Admin: Two people who are able to help out on the organising process. You
will need to make phone calls, process payments, update records and do
general admin work.
Recording of the proceedings: You will need a video camera, preferably HD
- need to be able to give us a digital capture ideally, and the
appropriate sound equipment for the area.
Film screening: You will need to be able to help out with screening the
segments of several films during the conference.

4.No More Mualagh project has been established to address the needs of
Afghani people in rural areas of Australia in relation to the correct use
of antidepressant medication. The project has been jointly run by
Multicultural Mental Health Australia (MMHA), National Ethnic Disability
Alliance (NEDA) and University of South Australia, Associate Professor
Nicholas Proctor.
The project will accumulate at a launch on Monday 17 October, at this
years Diversity in Health Conference.

1.Consumer and Carer Participation Policy A Frame for the Mental Health
Sector. The National Consumer and Carer Forum (NCCF) has developed this
document as a guide for all organisations involved with mental health
within the public, private and non-government sectors, to utilise in the
development and/or implementation of consumer and carer participation
policies. This Policy aims to cover all levels of participation and
includes consumer and carer input at individual, local, state and national
levels.

2.Culture Diversity Guide. Multicultural Strategy Victorian Government
Department of Human Services.The guide outlines core principles for valuing
diversity, reducinginequality, encouraging participation and promoting the

3.Carer Life Course Framework: an Evidence-Based Approach to Effective
Carer Education and Support.The paper presents the findings of the Carer
Life Course Framework, acomponent of the Carers NSW Carers Mental Health
Project. The project develops a theoretically and empirically based
framework with practical applications for ensuring that carers of people
with a mental illness/mental disorder receive appropriate information and
support interventions depending upon their place in the caring journey,
their life course/life stage, and their relationship to the person with
the mental illness/mental disorder. The framework reflects the lived
experiences of carers as well as the findings from a comprehensive
literature review. Copies are available free to carers or $44.00 to

3.Consumer Participation and CALD Communities Conference
The aim of the conference will be to provide an opportunity for
health-promoting workers and consumers from across Victoria to share,
discuss and debate culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) consumer
participation strategies in health service/ program and health promotion
planning, delivery and evaluation. The knowledge of CALD consumer
participation shared and generated at this conference will be used to
enhance the relevance, accessibility, equity and quality of health
services and programs and health promotion initiatives.

5.Lifeline Australia and LivingWorks, with the support of the Commonwealth
Department of Health & Ageing, will be hosting two interactive suicide
postvention workshops, to be presented by American suicidology expert Dr.
Frank Campbell.
