WHATS NEW?
1.$1.8 Billion in Mental Health Funding
The announcement by the Prime Minister today of $1.8 billion of new
Commonwealth Government funding will improve mental health services in the
community across Australia.
The Governments package of initiatives comprehensively addresses the
areas for which the Commonwealth is responsible, such as increasing access
to primary health care, increasing the mental health workforce, more
respite places and funding for people with mental health and drug or
alcohol problems.

2. Suicide and Mental Illness in the Media New resources for the mental
health sector
Suicide and Mental Illness in the Media: A Mindframe resource for the
mental health sector comprises a range of new resources produced for the
mental health sector under the Mindframe National Media Initiative. The
resources, which include a website, resource book and quick reference
cards, contain information on talking to the media about suicide and
mental illness. The aim of the resources is to support accurate and
appropriate reporting that will minimise the risk of harm and reduce the
stigma experienced by people who live with a mental illness.

3. Aqua Exercise classes for Older Arabic-speaking women
The OWN Bankstown Wellness Centre is offering a 20-week program of Aqua
Exercise classes for older Arabic-speaking women, beginning Friday 5 May
at the Wran Leisure Centre Pool, Gundaroo Street, Villawood.
·The Aqua Exercise activity is for older Arabic-speaking women aged 50
years and over.·Classes begin Friday 5 May 2006 and finish Friday 29 September 2006 and
will be held at the Wran Leisure Centre, Pool, Gundaroo St, Villawood.
Please note: there will be no classes during school holidays.·Time: 11am to 12 pm.
·An Arabic-speaking Aqua Exercise Instructor will be taking the class.
·Participants must book and register in advance, as the number of places
is limited.Cost: $40 for 20 weeks, plus pool entry of $2.70 (Pensioners $1.40).

4. Senate Select Committee on Mental Health release report - CALD Chapter
The Senate Select Committee delivered its first report on Thursday 30
March 2006 regarding the state of Australia's mental health system. The
chapter on CALD communities is of particular interest and can be accessed

EVENTS AND TRAINING
1.National Activities on Suicide Bereavement Project
As part of the National Suicide Prevention Strategy (NSPS), the National
Bereavement Reference Group (NBRG) was established in august 2005 to
oversee the development of a nationally coordinated approach to suicide
bereavement activities. A priority of the NBRG together with the
Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing was commissioning of
research to review, analyse and consolidate the most appropriate methods,
models and service delivery options for nationally coordinated suicide
bereavement activities. This work is the basis for the National Activities
on Suicide Bereavement Project.
The project team are running a series of consultations and surveys as part
of the project. The next consultation forum will be at the following
location.

2. From Tolerance to Respect: Cultural Competence in Practice 2 day
Conference
The Multicultural Disability Advocacy Association of NSW (MDAA) and the
National Ethnic Disability Alliance (NEDA) are pleased to announce a two
day conference for researchers, policy makers and anyone who manages,
receives or provides services in diverse communities. The focus is on
practical approaches to working with people from diverse backgrounds.
The conference will provide local, national and international perspectives
on best practice in responding to community diversity and competing
needs.

3. 2nd WA Transcultural Mental Health Conference Incorporating the
Convention for Mental Health Carers.

1. List an Event on the MMHA website
The MMHA website has the ability for you to list an event. Go to
http://www.mmha.org.au/Events/event_submit_form which will take you
directly to the MMHA event submission form. Fill in the form and submit.
All event submissions will be mediated for appropriateness.
2.Beyond Words: lessons on translation, trust and meaning from the no more
mualagh project
Beyond Words is now available on the MMHA website for download. You can
