SPECIAL FULL COLOUR EDITION - SYNERGY No.2 2006: Creativity, culture and
the arts
This special full-colour edition of Synergy, which focuses on the role of
creativity and the arts in the promotion of good mental health and the
effective treatment of mental health problems, is now available on the
MMHA website. The arts are a way of expression in any culture whether it
is through writing, painting or dance movements. Participation in
creative expression is a form of communication - a way to convey and
understand ones culture, ones being. It can also be a process of
healing.
This edition explores examples of how expression through art can be
successful in assisting people from diverse cultural backgrounds who find
it difficult to feel part of Australian society.
Many cultures find it a taboo to seek help in discussing their personal
life, their difficulty with interacting with others or even their
overwhelming sense of being disconnected. The articles featured in this
edition of Synergy look at culture and mental health through the many
different mediums of arts that can enhance peoples wellbeing and help in
the recovery process for people with mental health problems.
Creativity lives in all of us - its expression enriches our lives and
builds our resilience.
Multicultural Mental Health Australia thanks all the artists who have
shared their experiences to contribute to this edition, and especially
those who have allowed us to reproduce their work. We trust you will enjoy
this edition, the beautiful images and the inspiring examples of
creativity and hope.
